about

so you know how there’s love at first sight or ‘I’M GONNA BANG THIS PERSON IF I CAN BECAUSE DANG THEY’RE BEAUTIFUL’

well that was me when i saw the lyrics float across my dash. in the words of my friend:

IT IS YOUR DESTINY [11:05PM]

so i kind of thought about what style i’d emulate because generic lullabies are boring and lazy and i’d probably get slapped by my music teacher a bit

i asked my friend what the inspiration was for dalish elves (since i recall reading something about how city elves drew inspiration from the jewish community)

and she suggested the romani people, which was interesting and certainly food for thought. so i went lurking around on youtube for some romani and central european lullabies and found this gorgeous lullaby.

i don’t think i captured the entirety of the feeling, but it was inspired by this lullaby nonetheless.

the beginning was dissonant and layered to kind of represent people gradually joining into song- i imagine this would’ve been the tradition in the clans. idk

and as for any gross pronunciations, ehhhh. i could apologise for being lazy or just say that the dalish probably have regional dialects and different pronunciations ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: also I chose to add very little reverb for a more natural and (I cringe as I use the word) organic sounding recording to go with a folky outdoorsy style. Which was awfully difficult for me since I use reverb to cover up my intonation grossness ahhhh. Also managed to fall asleep twice while recording this. I’m either exhausted or the lullaby is just hella effective

lyrics

Elvish:
Elgara vallas, da'len
Melava somniar
Mala taren aravas
Ara ma'desen melar

Iras ma ghilas, da'len
Ara ma ne'dan ashir
Dirthara lothlenan'as
Bal emma mala dir

Tel'enfenim, da'len
Irassal ma ghilas
Ma garas mir renan
Ara ma'athlan vhenas
Ara ma'athlan vhenas

English:
Sun sets, little one
Time to dream.
Your mind journeys,
But I will hold you here.

Where will you go, little one,
Lost to me in sleep?
Seek truth in a forgotten land,
Deep within your heart.

Never fear, little one,
Wherever you shall go.
Follow my voice-
I will call you home.
I will call you home.
