Within/Without investigates the relationship between dance, space, and time. The opening uses tango rhythm in the murky lower registers, inviting the listener in with a mysterious and ambiguous tonality.

The piece expands into a brighter, more brazen feeling, widening the registeres to create drama.

It proceeds to use the highest registers of the piano, exploiting the tinny percussiveness in that range. The limited space and resonance of a music box is represented here in a folk dance, while maintaining the original boldness.

This section then opens up into a stormy and theatrical waltz, before returning to the tango figure in a new context.
